| The CRL organises annual proficiency tests for the NRLs. The aim of the proficiency test is to assess the ability of participating laboratories to isolate and identify the notifiable fish diseases and other current fish diseases. |

| |
| Each participating laboratory receives 5 coded ampoules containing lyophilised material, which has to be identified according to Commission Decision 2001/183/EC within a deadline of approximately 8 weeks. |
| |
| Each participating laboratory receives a report containing information on the virus isolates in the ampoules and a summary of the results of all laboratories in a coded version. The participants are informed of their own code number and are thus able to compare their performance to that of the others. |
